Ծնվել է Լոնդոնի Քամբերուել շրջանում, բանկի աշխատակցի ընտանիքում: Մանուկ հասակից հրապուրվել է ռոմանտիկական պոեզիայով: Ամուսնացել է բանաստեղծուհի Էլիզաբեթ Բարեթ Մոուլտոնի հետ[6], կնոջ հետ տեղափոխվել է Իտալիա, ապրել Ֆլորենցիայում: Ունեցել են մեկ որդի:

Բրաունինգը մահացել է Վենետիկում, թաղվել Վեստմինստերյան աբբայությունում՝ պոետների անկյունում[7]:

Ստեղծագործություններ

Բրաունինգը անդամակցել է Դիքենսի և Վորդսվորթի գրական խմբակին, ընկերություն է արել Թենիսոնի հետ:

Նրա սիրած գրական-գեղարվեստական ձևը դրամատիկական մենախոսությունն է՝ պատմական զանազան դրվագների պատումով, փիլիսոփայական խոհերով, հուշերով, խոստովանություններով հագեցված:

Բրաունինգին բնորոշ է լարված հետաքրքրությունը սուբյեկտիվ բարոյահոգեբանական կոնֆլիկտների նկատմամբ: Իրեն առավել հոգեհարազատ ժանրը նա համարել է «ինտրոսպեկտիվ դրաման» (իր իսկ ձևակերպումն է):

Նրա առավել հայտնի գործերից է The Laboratory / «Լաբորատորիա» պոեմը, որը պատմում է մի կնոջ մասին, ով թույն է օգտագործում իր սիրածի ընկերուհուն սպանելու համար:

Բրաունինգի ամենածավալուն ստեղծագործությունը «Մատանին և գիրքը» / The Ring and the Book. պոեմն է[8], որը բաղկացած է ավելի քան քսան հազար տողից։ Այն հիմնված է իրական պատմության վրա և պատմում է 17-րդ դարի վերջին Իտալիայում կատարված իրական ոճրագործության մասին։ Դրա գլխավոր հերոսը Պոմպիլիա Կոմպարինին է՝ երիտասարդ մի կին, որը մահացու դանակահարվել է ամուսնու՝ կոմս Գվիդո Ֆրանչեսկինիի կողմից։

Գրողի լավագույն գիրքը, թերևս, Տղամարդիկ և կինը խորագիրը կրող մենախոսությունների ժողովածուն է, որն առաջին անգամ լույս է տեսել 1855 թվականին։

Բրաունինգի հրատարակած վերջին գիրքը Ասոլանդոն է, որը տպագրվել է 1889 թվականին[9]:

Գիլբերտ Քիտ Չեսթերտոնը Ռոբերտ Բրաունինգի մասին գրել է կենսագրական մի գիրք, որը 1903 թվականին հրատարակվել է Macmillan & Co.-ի կողմից։
