Կենսագրություն

Ջոն Ուելսը ծնվել է 1939 թվականի մարտի 11-ին, Անգլիայի Լանքաշիր դքսության Բութլ քաղաքում։ Նրա մայրը անգլիացի է, իսկ հայրը գաղթել էր Հարավային Աֆրիկայից։ Ջոն Ուելսն ունի նաև երկու փոքր եղբայրներ։ 16 տարեկանում սկսել է ուսումնասիրել էսպերանտո։

Ընդունվելով Քեմբրիջի համալսարանի Տտրինիտի-քոլեջը, 1960 թվականին ստանում է բակալավրի, իսկ 1964 թվականին մագիստրոսի աստիճան։ Ջոնը սովորել է նաև Լոնդոնի համալսարանի քոլեջում, որտեղ 1962 թվականին ստացել է մագիստրոսի աստիճան, իսկ 1971 թվականին՝ դոկտորական աստիճան։

Նրա ավելի հայտնի հրատարակություններն են Accents of English-ը, The Sounds of the IPA-ն, Lingvistikaj Aspektoj de Esperanto-ն, և արտասանության Longman Pronunciation Dictionary բառարանը։ Նա հանդիսանում է անգլերեն-էսպերանտո բառարանի հեղինակը և ASCII X-SAMPA հնչյունային բառարանի գյուտարարն է։
