Մայքլ Սթոուն ծնվել է Անգլիայի Լիդս քաղաքում, 1938 թվականին։ 1941 թվականին նրա ընտանիքը տեղափոխվել է Ավստրալիայի, Սիդնեյ քաղաք, որտեղ նա մեծացել է։ Սթոունը Հյուսիսային Սիդնեյի տղաների ավագ դպրոցում գերազանց առաջադիմությամբ սովորել է լատիներեն, եբրայերեն և հունարեն[2]։ 1956-1960 թվականներին սովորել է Մելբուռնի համալսարանում և ստացել բակալավրի աստիճան[3]։ Նրա հայրը եղել է Սիդնեյի համալսարանի միջազգային իրավունքի պրոֆեսոր և Երուսաղեմի հրեական համալսարանի Հարի Ս. Թրումանի անվան ինստիտուտի առաջին նախագահը։

1961-1965 թվականներին ուսանել է ԱՄՆ-ի Հարվարդի համալսարանում և ստացել փիլիսոփայական դոկտորի կոչում։ 1966 թվականին տեղափոխվել է Իսրայել և Երուսաղեմի հրեական համալսարանում դասախոսել համեմատական կրոնագիտություն։ Մեկ տարի անց ստացել է դոկտորի կոչում։ 1980 թվականին նա դարձել է հայագիտության և կրոնագիտության պրոֆեսոր։ Նունյ թվականին հիմնադրել է Հայագիտական միջազգային ասոցիացիան (անգլ.՝ Association Internationale des Études Arméniennes), որի նախագահն է եղել մինչև 2000 թվականը։ Այժմ կազմակերպությանն անդամակցում է մոտ 200 հետազոտող։

1992 թվականին նա գրել է «Պատմություն Ադամի և Եվայի մասին» աշխատությունը[4],1992, իսկ 1999 թվականինին պրոֆեսոր Գարի Անդերսոնի հետ հրատարակել այդ թեմայով գիրք[5][6]։

2000 թվականին Գարի Անդերսոնի հետ նա հրատարակել է Ադամի գրականության վերաբերյալ ուսումնասիրությունների ժողովածուն[7]։

Սթոունը 1995 թվականին Երուսաղեմի հրեական համալսարանում հիմնադրել է Մեռյալ ծովի մագաղաթների ուսումնասիրության «Օրիոն» կենտրոնը և ղեկավարել այն իր առաջին տարիներին։

2004 թվականին ստացել է հումանիտար գիտությունների դոկտորի կոչում։

2007 թվականին Մայքլ Սթոունն անցել է թոշակի և շարունակել իր պրոֆեսորական գործունեությունը Երուսաղեմի հրեական համալսարանում։

2005 թվականից Մայքլ Սթոունը Հայաստանի գիտությունների ազգային ակադեմիայի պատվավոր դոկտոր է։

Մայքլ Սթոունը զբաղվում էր նաև միջնադարյան հայ պոեզիայի թարգմանություններով, ներառյալ Առաքել Սյունեցու ստեղծագործությունները, որոնց մասին նա խոսում է բացառիկ հիացմունքով։ Հրեա գիտնականը հետաքրքրված է նաև հայկական տարեգրություններով և պեղումների ընթացքում Սինայի անապատում հայտնաբերել է մի շարք հին հայկական մատենագրեր։

1970-80-ական թվականներին Սինա լեռան վրա և նրա հարևանությամբ մենք գտել ենք շատ հին հայկական ձեռագրեր։ Դրանք արվել են 430-440 թվականներին։

Սթոունը մասնակցել է Վայոց ձորի մարզի Եղեգիս գյուղի շրջակայքում տեղի ունեցած հնագիտական պեղումներին, որտեղ գիտնականները հայտնաբերել են 13-րդ դարի հրեական գերեզմանատուն՝ եբրայերեն և արամեերեն՝ գերեզմանաքարերի վրա գրություններով։ Դա խոսում է այն մասին, որ 13-րդ դարում Հայաստանում ապրում էր հրեական համայնք։ Ըստ Սթոունի՝ հրեաները Հայաստան են տեղափոխվել Իրանից[8]։

Սթոունը նշում է, որ 1915 թվականի Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը ճանաչելու և փոխհատուցում տրամադրելու անհրաժեշտությունը կա, քանի որ սա կարևոր խնդիր է ողջ մարդկության համար։ Երուսաղեմի հրեական համալսարանի պաշտոնապես նշվում է Հայոց ցեղասպանության զոհերի հիշատակի օրը։

Մայքլ Սթոունը մոտ 40 գրքի և ավելի քան 400 հոդվածների հեղինակ է, որոնց մեծ մասը հայկական թեմաների մասին են[9][10]։

Սթոունը հավաքել է Սինայի, Նեգևի և քրիստոնեական սրբավայրերի բազմաթիվ լեզուներով գրաֆիտիի գրությունների լուսանկարներ։ Նա ինքը հրատարակել է նախագծի ընթացքում փաստագրված հայկական նյութերի մեծ մասը[11]։ Այդ նյութը տեղադրվել է rockinscriptions.huji.ac.il կայքում։

Հայագիտության մեջ ունեցած մեծ ավանդի և ծննդյան 80-ամյակի կապակցությամբ՝ 2018 թվականին Մատենադարանի տնօրեն Վահան Տեր-Ղևոնդյանը Մայքլ Սթոունին հանձնել է «Մատենադարան» հուշամեդալ[12]։
