Կանանց ներկայությունը գիտության մեջ ընդգրկում է գիտության պատմության ամենավաղ ժամանակները, որտեղ նրանք նշանակալի ներդրում ունեն: Գենդերով և գիտությամբ հետաքրքրված պատմաբանները հետազոտել են կանանց գիտական ջանքերն ու ձեռքբերումները, խոչընդոտները, որոնց բախվել են կանայք, և ռազմավարությունները, որոնք իրականացվել են, որպեսզի նրանց աշխատանքը «գրախոսվի» և ընդունվի խոշոր գիտական ամսագրերում և այլ հրապարակումներում: Այս հարցերի պատմական, քննադատական և սոցիոլոգիական ուսումնասիրությունն ինքնին դարձել է գիտական բնագավառ:
Բժշկության մեջ կանանց ներգրավումը տեղի է ունեցել մի քանի վաղ արևմտյան քաղաքակրթություններում, իսկ Հին Հունաստանում բնափիլիսոփայության ուսումնասիրությունը բաց է եղել կանանց համար: Կանայք մ.թ. առաջին կամ երկրորդ դարերում իրենց ներդրումն են ունեցել ալքիմիայի պրոգիտության մեջ: Միջնադարում կրոնական մենաստանները եղել են կանանց կրթության կարևոր վայր, և այդ համայնքներից ոմանք հնարավորություն են ընձեռել կանանց նպաստել գիտական հետազոտություններին: 11-րդ դարում առաջացել են առաջին միջնադարյան համալսարանները, իսկ կանայք, մեծ մասամբ, դուրս են մնացել համալսարանական կրթությունից[1]: Բուսաբանությունը որպես ակադեմիական շրջանակներից դուրս գիտություն, ամենաշատն է օգուտ քաղել վաղ ժամանակակից ժամանակների կանանց ներդրումներից[2]: Բժշկական ոլորտներում կանանց կրթելու նկատմամբ վերաբերմունքը, ըստ երևույթին, ավելի ազատական է եղել Իտալիայում, քան այլ վայրերում: Առաջին հայտնի կինը, ով գիտական ուսումնասիրությունների ոլորտում համալսարանական ամբիոնում դասավանդելու թույտվություն է ստացել, տասնութերորդ դարի իտալացի գիտնական Լաուրա Բասսին է[3]: Գենդերային դերերը հիմնականում դետերմինիստական են եղել տասնութերորդ դարում, և կանայք զգալի առաջընթաց են գրանցել գիտության մեջ: Տասնիններորդ դարում կանայք դուրս են մնացել պաշտոնական գիտական կրթության մեծ մասից, սակայն այս ժամանակահատվածում նրանք սկսել են ընդունվել ուսյալ միությունների շարքերը: Տասնիններորդ դարի վերջին, կանանց քոլեջների վերելքը աշխատատեղեր են ստեղծել կին գիտնականների համար և հնարավորություններ կրթության համար: Մարի Կյուրին ճանապարհ է հարթել գիտնականների համար ռադիոակտիվ քայքայման ուսումնասիրության համար և հայտնաբերել է ռադիում և պոլոնիում տարրերը[4]: Աշխատելով որպես ֆիզիկոս և քիմիկոս, նա ռադիոակտիվ քայքայման վերաբերյալ առաջին հետազոտություններն է անցկացրել և առաջին կինն է, ով ստացել է ֆիզիկայի Նոբելյան մրցանակ և դարձել է առաջին մարդը, ով ստացել է քիմիայի ոլորտում երկրորդ Նոբելյան մրցանակը: 1901-2022 թվականների ընթացքում 60 կին արժանացել է Նոբելյան մրցանակի: Ֆիզիկայի, քիմիայի, ֆիզիոլոգիայի կամ բժշկության բնագավառներում Նոբելյան մրցանակի են արժանացել քսանչորս կանայք[5]:
Միջմշակութային հեռանկարներ
1970-1980-ական թվականներին բազմաթիվ գրքեր և հոդվածներ են հրապարակվել կին գիտնականների մասին. Գրեթե բոլոր հրապարակված աղբյուրները անտեսել են գունավոր կանանց և Եվրոպայից և Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայից դուրս կանանց[6]: 1985 թվականին «Կովալևսկայա հիմնադրամի»[7] և 1993 թվականին «Զարգացող աշխարհի գիտության կանանց կազմակերպության»[8] ձևավորման շնորհիվ ավելի տեսանելի են դարձել նախկինում մարգինալացված կին գիտնականները, բայց, նույնիսկ այսօր, զարգացող երկրներում գիտության մերօրյա և պատմական կանանց մասին տեղեկատվությունների պակաս է զգացվում: Ըստ ակադեմիկոս Էն Հիբներ Կոբլիցի[9].
Ըստ Կոբլիցի` գիտության մեջ կանանց մասին այս ընդհանրացումները հաճախ չեն պահպանվում միջմշակութային առումով[10].
