Վալիս Չեյֆը (/ˈtʃeɪf/ Սեպտեմբերի 3, 1927 – Փետրվարի 3, 2019 [1]) ամերիկյան լեզվաբան էր։ Նա վաստակավոր Պրոֆեսոր է և հետազոտող Սանտա Բարբարայի Կալիֆոռնիական Համալսարանում[2]։

Չեյֆը ծնվել է Մասաչուսեթս նահանգի Քեմբրիջ քաղաքում: Ավարտել է Յեյլի համալսարանը, որտեղ դոկտորի կոչում է ստացել 1958 թ.-ին: 1975-1986 թվականներին եղել է Կալիֆոռնիայի Բերկլիի համալսարանի Կալիֆորնիայի և այլ հնդկական լեզուների հետազոտության տնօրեն : Ավելի ուշ նա տեղափոխվել է Կալիֆոռնիայի համալսարան, Սանտա Բարբարա, և 1991 թվականին դարձել համալսարանի վաստակավոր դասախոս [3]։ Չեյֆը ճանաչողագետ էր։ Նա իմաստաբանությունը համարում էր լեզվի հիմնական բաղադրիչ: Նա քննադատում էր Նոամ Չոմսկու սերող լեզվաբանությունը: [4]։ Նա ազդեցիկ գիտնական էր, ուսումնասիրում էր Ամերիկայի բնիկների, մասնավորապես ՝ իրոկուական և կադդոական լեզուները, կատարում էր խոսույթի վերլուծություն հոգելեզվաբանության, ինչպես նաև խոսքի առոգանության ոլորտում: 1986 թվականին Յոհաննա Նիկոլսի հետ միասին նա լեզվի evidentiality մասին մի հատոր է խմբագրել։ Սանտա Բարբարայում եղած ժամանակ նա և իր կինը ՝ լեզվաբան Մարիան Միթուն, հիմնադրել և ղեկավարել են «Ուոլաս Չեյֆ» և «Մարիան Միթուն» հիմնադրամները, որոնք ուղղված էին չուսումնասիրված լեզուների վերաբերյալ հետազոտություններին: Հիմնադրամը աջակցություն է տրամադրում ասպիրանտներին `վերացող, դեռևս չուսումնասիրված լեզուների լեզվական փաստաթղթավորման նախագծերի հետ կապված ծախսերը հոգալու համար։
