It is important to know that the Fortress of Baghras was said to be built by Nicephorus Phocas (on his return from Syria). This was noted to be around 1015 AD. The fortress was captured by Thoros, the Armenian ruler of Cilicia upon the arrival of Armenian refugees after the Moselem Conquest of their homeland near Ararat. The Prince of Antioch and the Templars demanded the return of the fortress, which led to a battle in Alexandretta in 1156 AD. Once peace was made Thoros surrendered the castle to the Templars who in turn swore to give aid to Armenia in the future.
