Close-up of a bidar ( bidarra) off Stl George Island, Alaska. Bidars are built by native residents of the Pribilofs. The craft is a framework of oak, spruce and fir covered with a mixture of linseed oil, beeswax and paraffin. Although light in weight, the boat is capable of hauling a load of 8000 lbs. Many years ago, bidar covers were made from sea lion skins.
