Les six diagrammes ci-dessus montrent le fr:Soleil au centre (le point orange) et la bande orbitale (en jaune) d'une fr:planète quelconque. Les rebords de cette bande sont définis par le fr:périhélie (rebord intérieur) et l'fr:aphélie (rebord extérieur) de la planète.

  • À gauche, en haut : L'orbite de la planète mineure est entièrement contenue par celle de la planète —elle est intérieure.
  • À gauche, en bas : L'orbite de la planète mineure contient entièrement celle de la planète —elle est extérieure.
  • Au centre, en haut : L'orbite de la planète mineure pénètre celle de la planète par l'intérieur sans la traverser —c'est un frôleur-intérieur. Les astéroïdes Aton peuvent être des frôleurs-intérieurs ou des croiseurs.
  • Au centre, en bas : L'orbite de la planète mineure pénètre celle de la planète par l'extérieur sans la traverser —c'est un frôleur-extérieur. Les astéroïdes Apollon peuvent être des frôleurs-extérieurs ou des croiseurs.
  • À droite, en haut : L'orbite de la planète mineure est entièrement confinée par celle de la planète —elle est co-orbitale.
  • À droite, en bas : L'orbite de la planète mineure traverse celle de la planète de l'intérieur à l'extérieur —c'est un croiseur.

The six diagrams above show the en:Sun at the center (orange point) and the orbital band (in yellow) of any en:planet. The edges of this band are defined by the en:perihelion (inner rim) and the en:aphelion (outer rim) of the planet.

  • Top left: The minor planet's orbit is completely contained by that of the main planet —it's an inner cruiser.
  • Bottom left, : The orbit of the minor planet completely contains that of the main planet —it's an outer cruiser.
  • Top center: The orbit of the minor planet overlaps that of the main planet from the interior without completely crossing it —it's an inner grazer. Aten asteroids are inner grazers or crossers.
  • Bottom center: The orbit of the minor planet overlaps that of the main planet from the exterior without completely crossing it —it's a outer grazer. Apollo asteroids are outer grazers or crossers.
  • Top right: The minor planet's orbit is completely confined by that of the main planet —it's co-orbital.
  • Bottom right: The minor planet's orbit crosses the main planet's orbit from the inside to the outside —it's a crosser.
